TOKENJA (toe-ken-ja). One who is wise about tokens or 'Token Sage'

The Tokenja project is first and foremost a collaborative effort to develop a fun and collectible tabletop game however it also represents a completely new approach to game development, manufacturing and distribution. Development is open sourced and relies on input from community members/players. Our products are made by digital manufacturing facilities all around the world and shipped directly to you. You may order Blank tokens from us and have the complete freedom to design, build and paint your own unique token art and ratings or buy cool finished tokens from our community of artist and designers. You may also base or re-base your existing miniatures and use them to play Tokenja.

Check out some samples of what you can do with tokens in our Community portal or add your own samples and instructional videos. You can show support for our efforts by purchasing tokens directly through our digital fabricators or by contributing content to this dedicated wiki portal. We also encourage people to spread the word through blogging, tweeting, video or any other social networks/media you frequently use. Many Thanks...

Basics

You play the game as a Tokenja (Token Sage). As a Tokenja, you have the ability to create and use special tokens that represent unique creatures, things, or heroes made from the five basic elements of Water, Air, Fire, Earth and Spirit. The game of Tokenja combines the best features of miniature tabletop gaming and collectible trading card games. Like miniatures, they can be customized by simplified painting techniques, application of artwork or printed images and other finishing techniques. Tokens also behave like miniatures as they can move, change facings, effect other tokens at range and so on. Like trading cards, tokens are small, flat and mobile with quick play game mechanics and minimal setup which does require boards or scenery.

As your collection of tokens grow, you can trade with or challenge other Tokenja in friendly competition to increase your skill and knowledge. To create or participate in these events, please check our Current events page for more information.

Tokens

Tokens are the basic building blocks used to play Tokenja. They are hexagon in shape with six edges and six corners. The edges are called 'faces' and are an important consideration when playing tokens as they will apply bonuses or penalties when in opposition with each other. There are two forward faces, two side (flanking) faces and two rear faces depending on the image orientation of your creature or item. Each 'corner' can contain a colored crystal that represents a numeric rating from one to six for each color. The color of the crystal represents a unique rating for that token as follows:

  1. Red = Will
  2. Blue = Skill
  3. Green = Action
  4. Yellow = Gifts
  5. Purple = Defense
  6. Orange = Power

W.A.F.E.S Mini Game

Tokenja does not use dice to generate random numbers however during the game you will need to resolve conflicts between tokens which come into contact or opposition. WAFES or (W)ater, (A)ir, (F)ire, (E)arth, (S)pirit is a quick mini game that is used throughout the game. It can provide a random bonus to your ratings, provide a chance of success for gifts and is used to determine which player goes first. It is similar to a game of rock, paper, scissors except you are using from one to five fingers on each 'throw' to determine final results. See the WAFES page for more details on how and when to play.

Gameplay

Tokenja requires at least two players to start a game however any number of players can participate in both team format or independently. The total number of tokens used by each player can vary from game to game however 7 tokens is most common. A game of WAFES is used to determine who plays first, second and so on. Each player places all available tokens in front of them in a "stack" on the playing surface to begin the game. The player or team wins the contest when all opposing tokens have been removed from play.

The game is measured in turns. Gameplay is completed in a series of rituals in which players perform a set of defined actions. When all players have completed all rituals the turn is complete and a new turn is started. Turns progress in sequence 1,2,3...until a winning player or team is determined.

Ritual 1: Placement

The first ritual is the ability to place tokens into play. Player 1 is the first to place a token from their stack. Players may only place a single token into play per turn unless effected by gifts. All players must follow guidelines for the proper placement of tokens as follows:

  1. You may only place tokens into direct contact with friendly or opposing tokens except for the first token played.
  2. Tokens may only be placed along the faces of other tokens so the crystal edges are aligned and faces are touching.
  3. You may only place your token with the front facing touching the opposing token.
  4. You may only place a token along the front facing of an opposing token unless:
    • that token already has an opposing token on its front facing in which case the token can be placed on a side facing
    • that token already has two opposing tokens on its front and side facing in which case the token can be placed on a rear facing

Ritual 2: Movement

Movement of tokens includes any changes in facing of token, movement along face of opposing token or movement to another token in the same or different rank. Tokens with the lowest Action Rating are allowed to move first. This allows Tokens with higher Action Ratings to react and move based on the movement of slower tokens. Tokens which have equal Action Rating then proceed to Gift Rating, Skill Rating, then Will Rating to determine which token must go first. Tokens may only make 1 movement per turn unless effected by the use of gifts. Note that placement of tokens into play is not considered movement.

Ritual 3: Conflict

Conflict takes place when tokens in opposition declare a conflict with 1 or more tokens in opposition. Tokens with the highest Action Rating may declare conflicts first. Any ties are then resolved by Gift Rating, Skill Rating, then Will Rating to determine which token may go first. A tokens with the highest Action Rating may elect to pause or wait and not declare conflict. That token may then declare conflict at any point in the turn at the players discretion.

Ritual 4: Resolution

Resolution is used to resolve conflicts for tokens in opposition and for resolving the use or effect of gifts. Resolution for tokens in opposition use the W.A.F.E.S. mini game to determine results.
